Job description : Operations Manager
The Operations Manager is responsible for oversight of the day-to-day activities of the Shipyard by providing effective and efficient management, administrative, and technical support working very closely with the Head of Shipyard Operations to achieve cost-effectiveness of operations.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Achieve a deep understanding and knowledge of all products and/or services provided by Taylor Smith Naval Services Limited shipyard to ensure that operations ran smoothly.
- Act as the eyes and ears of the Head of Shipyard Operations on the ground.
- Motivate productivity of the shipyard employees in collaboration with the Chief Engineer and Yard Supervisor.
- Adhere to and manage production costs for each job including, but not limited to labor and material resources, production budget, and scheduling to ensure cost-effectiveness of services provided.
- Liaise with Store Manager to purchase materials, plan inventory, and ensure overall warehouse/store efficiency including that of the fuel depot.
- Work closely with the Store Manager/Fuel Depot concerning stock replenishment, local or overseas orders, customs clearance, and such related matters for timely delivery.
- Verify employee timecards and billable hours for each job or activity before Head of Shipyard Operations
- Verify and check on the quality of work produced for each job and advise the Head of Shipyard Operations accordingly of any shortfall or discrepancies.
- Perform quality controls on different aspects of the services/operations and monitor production KPIs – introduce KPIs if necessary.
- Advise Head of Shipyard Operations regarding manning and expense goals and ensure efforts are made to meet projections.
- Manage all aspects of off-site work efficiently and effectively (once approved and allocated by the Head of Shipyard Operations) for cost-effectiveness.
- Ensure compliance with all safety, quality, company, and regulatory directives in conjunction with the Head of Shipyard Operations and the Health and Safety Officer and make improvements as and when necessary, ensure the overall tidiness of the workshops and the shipyard for a safe working environment.
- Contribute to the annual budget exercise for the shipyard.
- Attend regular staff meetings and/or briefings with the Head of Shipyard Operations for smooth operations of the shipyard.
- Actively participate in management meetings and/or committees to ensure that the shipyard team is well-informed of key developments.
- Conduct performance assessments and appraisals for the staff in collaboration with the Chief Engineer and Yard Supervisor to fulfill HR requirements (minimum every 6 months).
- Work closely with the HR Officer concerning recruitment, training needs, GOP, and staff welfare matters.
- Introduce or review processes and systems as and when necessary for improved operations and workflow in line with international best practices and in consultation with the Head of Shipyard Operations.
- Compile and submit weekly progress reports on work progress, and schedules for discussion with the Head of Shipyard Operations.
- Ensure the maintenance of adequate records and documentation for internal controls and audit purposes.
- Build productive trusting relationships with customers and suppliers.
- Find ways to improve customer service in consultation with the Head of Shipyard Operations, Head of Finance & Administration, Security Manager, and Health & Safety Officer.
- Perform similar, incidental, and any other duties as assigned.
Qualifications & Experience:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Naval Architecture, Marine Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or related field.
- 8-10 years of experience in shipbuilding, ship repair, or related industries, with at least 3-5 years in a managerial role.
Competencies:
- Having a very good knowledge of shipyard work or mechanical workshop operations coupled with a detailed or specific knowledge of all aspects of the cognizant trade is an added advantage.
- Proven work experience as an operations Manager or similar role is an added advantage.
- Have excellent organisational and strong leadership qualities.
- Strong work ethic and ability to work independently without any supervision.
- Be able to multi-task with good time management skills.
- Be able to pay attention to details and be very proactive.
- Have a high level of accuracy, efficiency, honesty, and accountability.
- Computer literate
- Have very good communication and very fluent in English and Creole.
- Ability to work independently without constant supervision.
- A critical thinker and a fast learner
- Need to have the right personality to interact with colleagues and clients.
- Must hold a driving license.
